Overview

Action for Media Education (AME) is a non-profit organization. We’ve been trailblazers in the development of media literacy programs since our incorporation in 1991. Our team includes parents and experts in education, journalism, mass communications, and community health.

We see media education as a
vital element of literacy due to the barrage of media messages aimed at us every day. See where we ’ve been, who we are, and how we can work together.

Mission

AME's mission is to move children and youth, as well as those adults who are concerned with their well being, from a position of passive media consumption to one of
interacting with the media as active, critical, and creative consumers and producers.

In order to accomplish this mission, AME
promotes and supports media education in homes and schools as well as in community groups serving youth.

History

AME, formerly known as the Foundation For Family Television, was developed in 1991 in response to a statewide survey by a University of Washington research team, which found widespread dissatisfaction and frustration among Washington State's parents with the quality of television programming for their families.

With the leadership of Jean Gardner, Washington's first lady and wife of then Governor Booth Gardner, a group of parents, community leaders, educators, and professionals concerned with children's issues formed this organization as a vehicle for taking constructive action in their local communities.
